Study report at Hyogo College of Medicine

My name is Biling Huang, a 4th-year student from ShanTou University, China. It was amazing to have this opportunity to spend one month in Hyogo College of Medicine.
First, my internship started in Immunology Department, where I spent 2 weeks and the second part was in the Department of Respiratory Medicine for another two weeks.
Immunology Department is much bigger than I imagined. When I first came to the department, everything was neat and clean. Immunology Department is the biggest experimental department in HCM and every member of the department is excellent. I felt honored to have this chance to come here.

The life in Immunology Department was full of harvest. Every morning, one of the members of the department would explain his research project to me, and in the afternoon, I would do experiments with the teachers. The first one to explain the project to me was the professor, whose project topic was the mechanism of PM2.5 causing lung diseases. The professor spent an hour and a half explaining his research results to me, but his research took five years, which shows how difficult scientific research work was, and they must have experienced many difficulties behind it, which made me more awed of scientific research.

In the following days, other teachers in the department also told me about their research projects. Dr. Adachi’s research was mainly about the identification and characteristics of il-33 induced tissue factor, which involves a lot of experimental methods and charts. When I did not understand, he would be very patient to speak again and again, until I understood. Dr. Matsushita's English is quite good, he spoke vividly and interestingly. Dr. Nakahira is very rigorous. He specially printed his research paper for my reference and explained all the points as clearly as possible.

Every afternoon, I would do some experiments under the guidance of the teachers. Such as ELISA, PCR and so on. They gave me a lot of hands-on opportunities and often praised me for doing well, which made me very happy and full of confidence.

During these two weeks, I have felt their enthusiasm and friendliness, as well as their seriousness and rigor for scientific research. They made me contact many new ideas and aroused my interest in scientific research. I am very grateful to them and feel much honored to be able to study in the Immunology Department.

During the second part of my journey, the Department of Respiratory Medicine, I had a full and wonderful life. Every morning, I would follow the doctors to work in the ward. Each bed is equipped with a set of curtains, which is good for protecting patients' privacy. What impressed me most was the harmonious relationship between doctors and patients. They would say hello to each other every time they went round the ward, and the doctor would explain the current condition to the patients. When the patient had questions, the doctor would answer their questions patiently. They would also say goodbye and thank each other when they left.

Another thing that made me feel the harmonious doctor-patient relationship was the professor's clinic. In addition to the computers, there are also printer and projector in the outpatient room. Professor would explain each patient’s condition to me before they came into the room, and then printed out some meaningful results. When the patient came in, they would say hello to each other, and the professor would tell them my identity to get their agreement. After that, professor would show them the image and printing data to explain the condition and treatment. Then, they would say goodbye and thanked each other. I could felt that they respected each other very much.

For the treatment of patients, doctors would discuss with each other and make plans. Every Monday, there would be a meeting to discuss new patients. Each doctor in charge took turns to report the patient's condition, communicating with the professor and other doctors about the condition and treatment plan. The meeting lasted for about one and half an hour. After the meeting, the professor went round with all the doctors to check the patient's condition and adjust the treatment if needed. There was also a case discussion on Tuesday afternoon with all the doctors in the Respiratory Department, including the Department of Respiratory Medicine, the Department of Respiratory Surgery, the Department of Radiology, and the Department of Pathology. They discussed about difficult cases and gave professional advice to each patient. I was truly inspired by their rigor attitudes for medicine, their enthusiasm for work and their constant willingness to learn new things.

In addition to the wards, I often spent the rest of my time in the bronchoscope room. In the process of operation, they would focus on the patient, calm them down and encourage them to better cooperate to the check. In this process, I felt their humanistic care deeply.

During the two-week internship in the Department of Respiratory Medicine, I felt the high intensity of doctors' work, but they still kept their enthusiasm for work every day. Their natural humanistic care, harmonious doctor-patient relationship, progressive learning attitude and rigorous work spirit are my models to learn from. To become an excellent doctor, I have a long way to go.

I also want to thank Ms. Kyoko Torii and Japanese students for helping us a lot these days. Their kindness meant a lot to me.

At the end, I am extremely grateful to Hyogo College of Medicine and Shantou University for giving me this precious opportunity and all the people who have helped me on this journey. I have learned a lot from this exchange, and I will continue to work hard with these gains. Thank you!
