My Japanese Adventure as an Exchange Student at Hyogo Medical University

Setting out on a journey to Japan was a long-cherished aspiration. However, I hadn't anticipated that my opportunity to explore this captivating country would come via a Student Exchange Program with Hyogo Medical University. For four weeks, I had the privilege of immersing myself in Japanese culture, both professionally and personally, while being based in Hyogo, Japan.

The Journey to Japan
The journey from Rijeka to Hyogo was an odyssey in itself. I embarked on a lengthy voyage, which involved a bus ride to Venice, a flight to Dubai, and finally, another flight to Osaka. The journey spanned an exhausting 36 hours each way. Despite the fatigue, the allure of Japan's culture and landscapes made it all worthwhile.

My Clinical Rotation Experience
My journey to Japan, alongside two university colleagues, was marked by a unique student exchange program. Over the course of four weeks at the Hyogo Medical University Hospital, I split my time between the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Department of Anesthesiology. It was an eye-opening and enlightening experience that allowed me to gain knowledge and techniques with Japanese medical professionals.

Language Barrier:
One of the notable challenges we faced during our stay in Japan was the language barrier. English was a rarity, especially in our medical settings, making effective communication a bit challenging. However, we were determined to bridge the gap and ensure that our interactions with patients, colleagues, and locals were as smooth as possible. In the hospital, we relied heavily on technology, particularly Google Translate, to facilitate communication. In everyday life outside the hospital, we also turned to Google Translate to navigate menus in restaurants, ask for directions, and engage in basic conversations with the locals.

Savoring Japanese Cuisine
During my stay in Hyogo, I was determined to make the most of my free time by immersing myself in the rich cultural tapestry of Japan. Every sight we visited, every meal we savored, and every interaction we had contributed to a profound understanding of Japan's culture and history. My time in Hyogo was a kaleidoscope of experiences, each one leaving an indelible mark on my journey. One of the highlights of our stay in Japan was indulging in the local cuisine. We made it a point to try a wide array of Japanese dishes, from sushi and sashimi to ramen and okonomiyaki. The flavors and textures were a sensory delight, and it was fascinating to observe the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each meal. Exploring the local markets and street food stalls became a cherished pastime, and we often found ourselves trying new dishes with the guidance of friendly locals.

Cultural Exchange
Our engagement with the local culture extended beyond the hospital and dining experiences. We had the privilege of meeting the faculty's English club, fostering connections with students who shared our passion for language and cultural exchange. These interactions allowed us to gain deeper insights into the lives and aspirations of our Japanese counterparts. As our time in Japan drew to a close, we were also fortunate to develop strong bonds with the Japanese doctors, including the ICU doctors.

Conclusion: A Transformative Experience
My four weeks in Japan, marked by interesting medical training, unforgettable explorations, and cultural immersion, left an indelible mark on me. This Student Exchange program not only enriched my medical knowledge but also broadened my horizons culturally. It was a journey filled with learning, adventure, and the warmth of new friendships. Japan, with its unique blend of tradition and modernity, will forever have a special place in my memories, and I look forward to the day I can return to this enchanting land.
