School of Medicine- Course Introduction
Department of Data Science
Departments of Basic Sciences(Basic Medicine)
Department of Data Science conducts research and education on clinical epidemiology and related academic fields. Clinical epidemiology is a field of study that analyzes populations to scientifically derive information that is immediately useful in society and clinical practice in order to answer all questions about the health and illnesses of all human beings, from healthy citizens who are not infected with disease to patients who are hospitalized and treated in hospitals, such as frequency, diagnosis, testing, treatment, and prognosis. Roughly speaking, it is so-called clinical research, but it is not limited to clinical research. Academic fields related to clinical epidemiology include research integrity and research ethics for conducting correct research, clinical reasoning for properly applying evidence obtained from clinical epidemiological research to medical treatment, and methods of educating medical professionals about clinical epidemiological research.
We are also responsible for some of the education related to social medicine and public health that was previously handled by the former Department of Public Health.
Our department conducts research on a wide range of issues that directly affect clinical decision-making, regardless of whether or not a patient has a disease, medical department, or occupation. In particular, our clinical epidemiological research on the risks associated with medical care (iatrogenic adverse events, drug-induced adverse events) has published many of the most representative research results in Japan. We also work with many specialists to conduct clinical research on comparing treatments for various diseases and on patient prognosis. We provide various forms of clinical research education for not only doctors, but also other medical professionals such as nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists, contributing to the development of high-quality clinical research from Japan.
In this department, researchers and medical professionals with various backgrounds, including faculty, graduate student and researchers, work hard every day to hone their knowledge, and new evidence is published in international academic journals every day. In addition, when combined with external collaborating researchers, we cover all medical fields, professions, and regions, and we always conduct research and educational activities from a global perspective.
