Clinical Epidemiology

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Science Program)

The Department of Clinical Epidemiology conducts research and education in clinical epidemiology and related academic fields. Clinical epidemiology is a scientific field that analyzes populations to answer all questions about human health and disease, from healthy citizens to hospitalized patients, such as frequency, diagnosis, testing, treatment, and prognosis, and derives information that is immediately useful in society and clinical settings. Broadly speaking, it is clinical research, but it is not limited to clinical research. Academic fields related to clinical epidemiology include research integrity and research ethics for conducting proper research, clinical reasoning for correctly applying evidence obtained from clinical epidemiological research to medical practice, and methods for educating healthcare professionals about clinical epidemiology research.

Our department conducts a wide range of research on issues directly related to clinical decision-making, transcending the boundaries of disease presence or absence, medical department, and profession. In particular, our clinical epidemiological research on the risks associated with medical care (iatrogenic adverse events, drug-induced adverse events) has published many of Japan's leading research results. We also collaborate with many specialists to conduct clinical research on comparing treatments for various diseases and patient prognosis. We provide various forms of clinical research education for not only physicians but also medical professionals such as nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists, contributing to the development of high-quality clinical research disseminated from Japan.

In our department, faculty, graduate students, and researchers from a variety of backgrounds, including researchers and medical professionals, work together to improve their knowledge and skills, and new evidence is published in international academic journals every day.In addition, when combined with external collaborators, we cover a wide range of medical fields, professions, and regions, and we always conduct our research and educational activities from a global perspective.
