School of Medicine- Course Introduction

Department of Gastroenterological Surgery Division of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)

This department conducts basic and clinical research aimed at developing safer and more accurate surgical procedures, as well as treatments that combine drug therapy and immunotherapy, for diseases of the upper digestive tract, which consists of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, particularly malignant tumors. Our goal is to train internationally minded surgeons who are aware of the direction surgery should take, can respond to new changes, and can disseminate their research results to the world.

The research topics are as follows:

Fundamental research toward the development of surgery using artificial intelligence (AI):
In collaboration with industry and academia, we are developing AI that can assist in the uncharted territory of "decision-making by surgeons" and perform surgeries with accuracy and safety that surpasses even that of experienced surgeons.

Research aimed at improving esophageal cancer treatment outcomes:
We aim to improve multidisciplinary treatment of esophageal cancer, which still has a low cure rate, and surgical procedures using the latest optical technology.

Research on comprehensive treatment strategies for esophagogastric junction cancer:
For gastroesophageal junction cancer, which has been the subject of increasing research in recent years, we are establishing surgical techniques based on anatomy and developing pre- and post-operative treatments to maximize the effectiveness of surgery.

Study on conversion surgery for advanced gastric cancer:
With the motto "Never give up on Stage IV gastric cancer," we are developing surgical treatments combined with drug therapy.

Research on surgical treatment for severe obesity:
I am researching surgery for severe obesity and its effectiveness in reducing weight, as well as the effectiveness of treatments for related health disorders such as diabetes. With the unique perspective of someone involved in clinical practice, I would like to advance medical research that looks ahead to the future while imagining what surgery will be like 10 years from now.
