School of Medicine- Course Introduction

Department of Thoracic Oncology

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)

In developed countries, large amounts of asbestos were consumed in the 20th century, which has led to a rapid increase in the incidence of a malignant tumor called mesothelioma. In Japan, the incidence of this disease has been increasing in recent years, somewhat later than in Europe and the United States. Mesothelioma develops in the pleura, as well as the pericardium and peritoneum, and has an extremely poor prognosis, so there is a global demand for the establishment of early diagnosis methods and the development of effective treatments. Asbestos can also cause lung cancer.
A large number of patients with asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma, visit our facility from nearby areas and across the country. Our department focuses on both medical treatment and research.
In terms of medical treatment, the Mesothelioma Center, which is the hospital's central medical department, provides asbestos screening and outpatient care.
In terms of research, in addition to clinical research, we also conduct basic research using a multifaceted approach, including genetics, molecular biology, pathology, and immunology, with the goal of elucidating pathological conditions and developing new treatments.
We aim to continue providing high-quality medical care and research in order to meet the needs of society, with the aim of early detection and improving the prognosis of these difficult-to-treat malignant diseases.
