<Research Field>
In clinical research, we place emphasis on safety with the aim of performing minimally invasive surgery, and we are researching innovative surgical procedures for each disease. For example, we have reported on a safer and simpler surgical procedure that can be performed on small children weighing less than 10kg by combining a gastroscope and laparoscope using a new device for gastrostomy. We have also conducted research on pediatric cancer, mainly pediatric renal tumors, and have published many results. We also conduct research on Chinese herbal medicine treatment related to pediatric surgical diseases.
Basic research includes research into the growth and development of the fetal digestive tract, molecular biology of pediatric malignant solid tumors, and the mechanism of action of herbal medicines.
<Medical Field>
Pediatric surgery is a medical department that treats illnesses that cannot be cured without surgery in children from babies to junior high school students. The main areas of treatment are as follows.
1. Neonatal Surgery
In cooperation with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), we are responsible for surgical treatment of newborn babies. We perform surgeries for congenital diseases such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia, congenital intestinal atresia, and anorectal malformation, which require high urgency.
2. Infant Surgery
In addition to common illnesses such as inguinal hernia, acute appendicitis, and intussusception, we also perform surgery for a wide range of illnesses that require a high level of expertise, such as biliary atresia, Hirschsprung's disease, respiratory diseases, and childhood cancer.
3. Endoscopic surgery
Instead of making a large incision in the abdomen (laparotomy), surgery is performed by making several small holes and inserting a laparoscope or thoracoscope (an endoscope, a type of camera) and instruments. The benefits of this procedure include a small incision, less postoperative pain, and quicker recovery, which reduces the burden on the body. In pediatric surgery, the main procedures include radical inguinal hernia repair, appendectomy, splenectomy, radical repair of congenital biliary dilatation, pectus excavatum surgery, and lung resection.
