School of Medicine- Course Introduction

Department of Diagnostic Pathology

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinico-Basic Medicine)

As the lecturer and practical trainer in this course, I provide lectures and practical training for second-year School of Medicine students that promote understanding of the causes of diseases and their morphological changes, mainly focusing on the general theory of pathology. For fourth-year School of Medicine students, I give lectures focusing on the overview of pathological diagnosis as the final diagnosis of tumors actually performed in the pathology department of a hospital. From the second half of the fourth year to the first half of the sixth year, I conduct clinical training on understanding pathological changes throughout the body and the actual diagnosis of individual diseases using pathological autopsy cases. I also provide pathology-related lectures for third- and fourth-year students in the system-specific lectures. In terms of medical care, Hyogo Medical University Hospital am in charge of biopsies and tissue diagnosis of surgical materials, cytology, intraoperative rapid diagnosis, and pathological autopsy in general, which are performed at Hyogo College of Medicine Hospital.

With the recent segmentation of clinical practice, each pathologist is providing more specialized care to each medical department, focusing on diagnoses in their own field of expertise. We actively participate in pre- and post-operative conferences with each department, striving to share information and provide feedback. In addition, by holding clinical pathology autopsy case conferences after pathological autopsies, we strive to conduct as detailed an examination as possible to help improve future diagnoses and treatments.

Our research includes the pathological analysis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), which are mesenchymal tumors that occur in the digestive tract; molecular pathological analysis of the pathology of various fields such as blood diseases; elucidation and application of the anti-tumor effect of interleukin-18; development of tumor treatments using epigenetic modifiers; and elucidation of the onset mechanisms of individual lifestyle-related diseases.
