School of Medicine- Course Introduction
Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)
Our two main pillars are sensory medicine, including hearing, balance, smell, and taste, and head and neck tumors. We develop surgical procedures for nasal and otological surgery based on the largest number of cases in the country, treat eosinophilic sinusitis with endoscopic sinus surgery under a navigation system and biological agents, perform postoperative evaluations using the Nasal Symptom Questionnaire (NSQ score) and Postoperative Endoscopic Score (E score) proposed by our department, improve surgical methods for cholesteatoma in middle ear surgery, and introduce bilateral same-day surgery for bilateral chronic otitis media with bilateral perforation, and conduct clinical research based on these.
We have one of the few specialized outpatient clinics for smell and taste disorders in the country. We develop tests and treatments for smell and taste disorders and conduct statistical studies to further improve treatment outcomes. We also identify causes and provide treatment using traditional Chinese medicine. We also advocate the "Smell Assessment Questionnaire (SAOQ)," which can be used to easily evaluate the sense of smell, and are working to popularize it.
We use VEMP (Evoked Myogenic Potential) tests to identify the cause of dizziness in patients with vertigo, and ENoG tests to evaluate the prognosis of facial nerve paralysis, and we are considering improvements to these tests and the associated treatments. In the Eustachian tube function outpatient clinic, we develop diagnosis and treatment methods for Eustachian tube dysfunction. We also perform Eustachian tube prosthetic material insertion surgery.
For head and neck cancer, we provide multidisciplinary treatment, including examining surgical treatment results, devising methods to restore voice after laryngectomy, preserving function through radiation chemotherapy, and introducing robotic surgery (Da Vinci). We aim to improve treatment outcomes by conducting clinical and pathological studies on the various head and neck tumors that we have diagnosed and treated.
We present the results of our clinical research based on our abundant case studies in each field at domestic and international conferences, and publish papers in both Japanese and English every year.
