School of Medicine- Course Introduction

Department of Ophthalmology

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)

It is said that humans obtain 80% of information through vision. If visual information is not obtained properly, it will affect behavior and cognition. Protecting this important vision is the mission of ophthalmology. At our university, we provide medical care and research on the eyes and the ocular adnexa related to vision. In particular, we have specialized outpatient clinics for macular diseases such as pediatric strabismus amblyopia, eyelid and corneal diseases, glaucoma, retinal detachment, central serous chorioretinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration, and we treat many cases. At the Eye Center, an operating room dedicated to ophthalmology, many surgical procedures are performed every day. Through our extensive clinical experience, we aim to clarify the pathology of various eye diseases and establish new diagnostic and treatment methods.

We have formed a collaborative research system with the Faculty of Engineering at Kwansei Gakuin University, and are investigating the mechanisms of eye diseases from various biological reactions and visual function evaluations, such as eye position, blinking, line of sight, visual acuity, skewed vision, and pupillary response, while also working to discover minute structural changes in tissues by analyzing various ophthalmic images, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT). Graduate student play a major role in carrying out these research projects.
