School of Medicine- Course Introduction
Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery
Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)
In the Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery, we are engaged in clinical and basic research every day with the aim of improving breast cancer treatment. Currently, it is said that one in nine Japanese women will suffer from breast cancer, making it the cancer most familiar to women. As the number of breast cancer patients increases, the number of deaths also increases year by year, and many patients and their families suffer from breast cancer, so further improvements in diagnosis and treatment are desired.
Surgery is the most important treatment for breast cancer. We aim to perform surgery that preserves the shape and function of the breast without compromising the cure of the cancer, and we actively work in cooperation with the plastic surgery department on breast-conserving surgery and breast reconstruction surgery. Furthermore, we provide multidisciplinary treatment that combines surgery with drug therapy (chemotherapy, hormone therapy, molecular targeted drugs), radiation therapy, etc. according to the patient's condition. As an advanced initiative, we use genetic testing to predict the effectiveness of chemotherapy and introduce the latest treatments through clinical trials. We also perform genetics testing for hereditary breast cancer, and take measures according to the risk and preventive surgery to reduce the risk.
In order to help as many patients as possible, it is essential to incorporate the latest medical techniques and to conduct medical research to improve breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. In order to realize effective multidisciplinary treatment tailored to each patient, we are working to develop diagnostic methods to select treatment methods and to elucidate the mechanisms of breast cancer, which will lead to the development of new drug therapies. We are also actively engaged in collaborative research with research institutes both in Japan and overseas, promoting distinctive and unique research in the field of breast cancer and reporting many of our findings in the form of papers.
