Intensive Care Medicine

Critical care medicine is defined as "an interdisciplinary specialty that specializes in the comprehensive management of patients with or at risk of acute, life-threatening organ dysfunction." Specifically, instead of dealing with organ-specific pathologies like internal medicine and surgery departments, it deals with pathologies that affect the patient's overall condition (post-operative management of surgical cases and diseases such as sepsis). While understanding the patient's overall condition, we treat the cause of the disorder and further improve the patient's overall condition by supporting the body's functions.

Intensive care medicine is a field that combines various fields such as artificial ventilation, assisted circulation, blood purification, and Clinical Pharmacy. Among these fields, we are currently conducting research on 1) pain relief and sedation for critically ill patients (research on improving patient prognosis and ICU stay), 2) perioperative use of beta blockers (research on arrhythmia), and 3) simulation of drug blood concentration during continuous blood purification therapy (antimicrobial drugs are used frequently in intensive care, and research on appropriate administration methods taking into account the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of these drugs).

Furthermore, the essence of intensive care medicine is team medicine. To achieve this, communication is necessary to reach a common understanding of the pathology. In my research, I would like to approach team medicine with a scientific approach.
There are no other academic subjects in Japan that focus solely on intensive care medicine, and we sincerely hope that this will bring together the next generation of people with aspirations to become intensive care physicians.
