School of Medicine- Course Introduction
IBD Center
others
For over 20 years, our university has been providing medical care by specialists in both internal medicine and surgery as a specialized hospital for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a collective term for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). The number of IBD patients in Japan has increased rapidly due to changes in social background, and the current number of UC patients is estimated to be over 220,000 and CD patients over 70,000.
Our IBD Center was established in 2009 and not only provides specialized outpatient care for over 2,000 IBD cases, one of the best in Japan, but also receives severe IBD cases from many other facilities around the country and provides highly specialized medical care that transcends the boundaries between internal medicine and surgery. In addition, we collaborate with other departments to conduct clinical and basic research based on our abundant case studies, and maintain an advanced research system.
In addition, in recent years, we have expanded the scope of our medical care to include inflammatory bowel diseases in general, such as intestinal Behçet's disease, nonspecific multiple small intestinal ulcers, MEFV-associated enteritis, and infectious enteritis, and we are providing specialized medical care and research that only a university hospital can provide.
We also consider it important to improve the education of young doctors, and we implement various programs. In particular, IBD treatment requires highly specialized clinical skills, but general knowledge and skills in the field of gastroenterology are also necessary. The greatest feature of our center is that not only can we provide specialized training centered on IBD in both internal medicine and surgery, but we can also simultaneously study general gastroenterology.
Education, clinical care, and research. We hope to continue to be one of the leading centers in Japan, focusing on these three pillars and contributing to society through cooperation with others.
