Department of Gastroenterological Surgery Division of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)

In hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, the focus of medical care and research is on "surgical removal and treatment of cancer (malignant tumors) in the liver, bile duct, gallbladder, and pancreas." These are all important organs, and surgery is characterized by the need for complex techniques.

Liver: Hepatectomy is an effective treatment for liver cancer. We apply "projection mapping" to liver resection, which uses fluorescence to mark the area to be resected. To achieve this, we were the first in the world to develop and introduce a device called MIPS (Medical Imaging Projection System), which helps with safe and accurate surgery. In the past, surgery was usually abandoned for advanced liver cancer, but we now administer drug therapy before and after surgery, expanding the possibilities of surgical treatment. We also combine drug therapy to treat metastatic liver cancer that has spread from colon cancer to the liver. In both cases, we provide the most advanced multidisciplinary treatment in Japan and the world.

Pancreatic: This type of cancer has been increasing in recent years, and is often discovered as a result of worsening diabetes or weight loss. Surgery is the most effective treatment, but 90% of patients who visit the hospital have advanced pancreatic cancer and are unable to undergo surgery. By adding drug therapy, we are expanding the possibility of such patients undergoing surgery, and we are also working hard to prevent recurrence after surgery.

Bile duct: When cancer develops in the bile duct, which is the passageway for bile produced in the liver, major surgery including the liver and pancreas is often required. With our extensive experience in liver, pancreas and transplant surgery, we can safely perform even complex surgeries. We provide cutting-edge multidisciplinary treatment that includes drug therapy.
