School of Medicine- Course Introduction

Department of General Internal Medicine

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)

Our department specializes in general medical practice, general internal medicine, and geriatrics. In general medical practice, general internal medicine, and geriatrics, we do not treat diseases and pathologies by organ, but rather treat them comprehensively and holistically as a human being, and provide the best possible medical care by tailoring them to our patients. In this way, we encourage research activities on themes that can contribute to the development of general medical practice, general internal medicine, and geriatrics, regardless of the type of research, such as basic research, epidemiological research, or clinical research.

For example, in the field of epidemiological research, an interdisciplinary research team was formed in November 2015 in collaboration with Hyogo Medical University, Sasayama Medical Center, and Hyogo College of Medicine to continue a cohort study of elderly people in the Tamba Sasayama area (Frail Elderly in Sasayama-Tamba Area = FESTA study). The research theme is the prevention of frailty, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis, and many results have been obtained so far that can contribute to improving the health of elderly people and preventing them from needing care. The significance of research in Department of General Internal Medicine is to strive to acquire knowledge across a wide range of fields and to master the scientific thought process to derive solutions to clinical problems, and we believe that continuing research activities and research education are important responsibilities of a university course.
