School of Medicine- Course Introduction

Department of Dermatology

Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)

Since the course was established in 1973 (Showa 48) by the first professor, Tokuji Fujinami (deceased), Professor Seiichiro Sagami (deceased), Professor Yukio Kitano (deceased), and Professor Kiyofumi Yamanishi have served as professors, and have conducted research on skin keratinization and immunity using morphological, biochemistry, and Molecular Biology Methods, achieving many results. In particular, they have recently reported that IL-33 produced by epidermal cells activates type 2 innate lymphocytes as an alarmin and contributes to the development of atopic dermatitis, leading the world. In October 2020, Nobuo Kanazawa became the fifth chair professor, and has begun an approach to clarify the connection with atopic dermatitis and the pathology of undiagnosed cases, focusing on autoinflammation, his specialty.

In clinical practice, as the main training facility for dermatologists and the educational training facility for allergy specialists, we make correct diagnoses of all kinds of skin diseases using skin pathology, image diagnosis, genetic analysis, etc., and provide optimal treatment for each case based on the latest evidence. Each staff member has a deep knowledge of the medical treatment and research in each field of dermatology, and by holding open discussions about diagnosis and treatment options, we are helping to train dermatologists who are not only knowledgeable but also able to think and respond independently. In addition, we conduct clinical research on elucidating the pathology of intractable skin diseases using disease model analysis and developing control methods, and on cases of biological drug administration, cutaneous vascular disorders, and skin diseases caused by arthropods, building new evidence and disseminating it to the world.
