School of Medicine- Course Introduction
Department of Cardiovascular Surgery
Departments of Clinical Sciences (Clinical Medicine)
In Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, we provide medical care under the motto of "performing the most appropriate surgery for each individual patient at a global level." We treat a wide range of diseases, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, arterial disease, arrhythmia, and heart failure. We aim to perform surgeries that place as little strain on the body as possible, and are a leader in Japan in endoscopic surgery that does not involve cutting the sternum. We also actively perform transcatheter surgeries that do not involve thoracic opening, and perform stent graft treatment for large blood vessel diseases and transcatheter aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis.
<Research>
Basic research:
With the motto of "Bench to Bedside," we conduct research that is directly linked to clinical practice and disseminate the results both domestically and internationally.
- Examination of the effect of artificial pancreas device on perioperative hyperglycemia during cardiovascular surgery
・Understanding and overcoming the mechanism of unilateral pulmonary edema after minimally invasive cardiac surgery
Clinical Research:
With the aim of developing new surgical techniques and improving surgical outcomes for elderly and high-risk patients, each member is actively presenting their findings at conferences and in the form of papers.
・Hybrid coronary revascularization for elderly patients with severe triple-vessel coronary disease
・Standardization of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery
- Prosthetic valve selection from the perspective of life prognosis in patients undergoing maintenance dialysis: bioprosthetic valve vs. mechanical valve
・Determining the size of the tricuspid valve prosthesis to suit the patient's body type - From the perspective of controlling secondary tricuspid regurgitation -
A new approach to prevent perioperative stroke using partial extracorporeal circulation in thoracic aortic stent graft surgery with cervical branch reconstruction
- Challenge to early diagnosis and early treatment of postoperative acute kidney injury in cardiopulmonary bypass patients
・Predicting reintervention for type II endoleak after abdominal stent graft insertion: Usefulness of abdominal ultrasound
<Education>
In addition to providing School of Medicine students with lectures on various diseases and observing surgeries, we have them actually participate in surgeries, learning about the 3D anatomy of the heart, rather than the 2D view they have learned about in textbooks. Through cardiovascular surgery, we hope to help students understand the preciousness of life and the weight of the responsibility that we, the surgeons, bear when performing surgery. We also regularly conduct wet labs using pig hearts as off-the-job training, to convey the joy of cardiac surgery.
