School of Medicine- Course Introduction

Biostatistics

Departments of Basic Sciences (Basic Science Program)

"Statistics is the grammar of science." These are the words of Dr. Karl Pearson, a pioneer of modern statistics who made various contributions (e.g., histograms, standard deviation, definition of correlation as product moments, research into its relationship with linear regression, introduction of chi-square statistics, etc.). These words suggest that when science is considered as a language, the grammar for interpreting it is statistics. Science can be considered as the act of systematically and empirically exploring and verifying the laws under which various phenomena of interest occur, so as to solidify them as knowledge and wisdom. In other words, science is not defined by its subject matter, but by this act, which can be said to include a "methodology." "Statistics" provides this foundation.

As one of the core courses in the School of Medicine, our department is a specialized course that deals with data itself, and in order to promote "Life Science," "Health Science," and "Data Science," we specialize in "biostatistics," a branch of statistics that targets living things, and we work day and night to conduct research, educate, and develop and produce human resources related to this field.
