Laboratory of Basic Pain Research

Endowed Course

Pain serves a crucial role as a warning signal, alerting the body to internal and external dangers. In some cases, however, even after the injury or inflammation has healed, excruciating pain can persist for long periods of time, significantly impairing quality of life. Our laboratory was established in April 2022 to understand a wide range of pain mechanisms, including acute, chronic, and neuropathic pain.

Pain is subjective and often difficult to evaluate objectively, as it can fluctuate due to various factors such as psychological influences. To gain a deeper understanding of pain, we promote comprehensive pain research by integrating methodologies from morphology, physiology, pharmacology, and genetics. Based on animal experiments, our research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying various types of pain, including neuropathic pain caused by nerve damage, diabetic pain and numbness, and visceral pain  associated with organ inflammation.

Alleviating pain is a fundamental goal of medicine and remains a critical global challenge. Our mission is to conduct fundamental research on pain, with the goal of translating our findings into treatments for patients suffering from pain.
