University Introduction

Message from the President

With the motto of "medicine that touches the heart" in mind, we come together as one

In 2022, our university celebrated its 50th anniversary with the support of many people. Since its founding by Dr. Shigeki Morimura in 1972, the university has maintained the founding spirit of "service to the welfare of society," "deep love for humanity," and "broad scientific understanding of humanity" as the basis of its mission in training medical professionals. In particular, we place emphasis on the first principle of "service to the welfare of society," and we train doctors who can serve the welfare of society with deep love for humanity and scientific observation and understanding. Currently, doctors who graduate from our university are highly regarded as good doctors who can practice holistic medical care that is kind to patients, and are at the core of medical care in various regions across the country, mainly in the Keihanshin area. In addition, our university has received very high praise not only for its education, but also for its research and medical treatment, including various ranking surveys.

In 2007, Hyogo University of Health Sciences with its faculties of School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, and School of Rehabilitation was established on Port Island in Kobe City. Since then, both universities have developed smoothly while working together under the same corporation, and merged at the turning point of their 50th anniversary. As a result, the new Hyogo Medical University was born, with four faculties of medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and rehabilitation, and four campuses in Nishinomiya, Kobe, Sasayama, and Umeda working together, and has made a new start with the slogan "EMPOWER THE PEOPLE - Medicine that touches people, as long as we are here". In addition, a new hospital with cutting-edge facilities is scheduled to open in 2026.

Our university aims to become a more attractive university for students, applicants, patients, and the local community. Our goal is to provide heartfelt medical care that not only cures illnesses and injuries, but also gives people courage and hope, and gives them the power to live. In particular, in terms of education, we intend to maintain a high national examination pass rate, as well as to cultivate medical professionals who are rich in humanity, have high ethical standards, and can challenge new things through active learning and high goal setting. To achieve this, we would like to further spread learning outcome-based education, increase active learning, and work to strengthen education in the clinical field. In all faculties, we will place emphasis on interprofessional collaboration (IPW) that supports everything from prevention to the acute and chronic phases, and even end-of-life care, and will further enhance interprofessional collaboration education (IPE).

For a university, maintaining and developing high ideals and academicism is of utmost importance. As a base of knowledge, our university places emphasis on originality in education, research, and clinical practice, and aims to train autonomous professionals who will lead the medical care of the future, and to become "Japan's No. 1 comprehensive medical university."

We sincerely look forward to welcoming students who share our school's founding spirit and vision, are full of enthusiasm and motivation, and are able to continue working hard toward the high goals they set for themselves.

April 2023
Keiichiro Suzuki, President of Hyogo Medical University
