Overview
In Morocco, non-pharmacological methods (such as massage) for palliative care of labor pain are not included in the basic midwife education and are not practiced in clinical settings. In a previous study, we developed an educational program for palliative care of labor pain for Moroccan midwives and confirmed the effectiveness of raising awareness of palliative care of labor pain and continuing to practice care. On the other hand, issues with educational programs aimed at individuals were also revealed, suggesting the importance of approaching midwives in the context of connections as a community of practice. Therefore, in this study, we consider the group of midwives, teachers, and students involved in the practice of palliative care of labor pain as a community of practice, clarify the current situation and issues regarding the acquisition and practice of palliative care of labor pain, and aim to develop an educational model for the acquisition of non-pharmacological methods (such as massage) for palliative care of labor pain in basic midwife education. We also clarify the process by which the research subjects form a community of practice by utilizing participatory action research methods.
What's new?
Development of an educational model for learning pain relief in labor in Morocco, where non-pharmacological methods (such as massage) are not included in the basic training for midwifery and are not practiced in clinical settings.
What are its advantages over other studies?
The study also utilises participatory action research methods to clarify the process by which research subjects form a community of practice.
What problem does it help solve?
Pain relief in labour is a type of care that is highly needed by new mothers, and by learning how to provide this care, we aim to improve the quality of childbirth care.
Possibility of other applications and developments
It will serve as a model for supporting countries facing challenges in the transition to quality midwifery care.
