Overview

Idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (pulmonary fibrosis) is a disease with a poor prognosis characterized by chronic inflammation of unknown etiology, thickening of the interstitium, and fibrosis. Animal models are generally created using inhalation or intraperitoneal injection of bleomycin. However, a major problem with this experimental model is that half of the animals die after administration. Therefore, we created a model in which interstitial pneumonia develops in only one lung.
In this course, we are using this experimental model to elucidate the pathology of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, develop treatments, and attempt to create models of other respiratory diseases using the same techniques.

What's new?

An animal model in which interstitial pneumonia develops in only one lung

What are its advantages over other studies?

This disease model is not only expected to have a high survival rate, but also allows the observation of the effects of drugs on normal and diseased tissues in the same individual, since the same individual has both healthy and diseased lungs.

What problem does it help solve?

The bleomycin administration model has a high mortality rate, with mice dying before the development of pulmonary fibrosis lesions is complete, making long-term observation impossible.
In this disease model, the disease develops in only one lung, so the survival rate after onset is high, which helps to solve the above-mentioned problems.
