Exchange Experience in Japan

段 韶琪さん(第4学年次)

As a Senior student of Shantou University, I am very grateful to have the opportunity studying in Hyogo Collage of Medicine, Japan. The experience of the clinical clerkship will be a special part of my campus life. On July 8th, we three took our way to Japan. First, we flied to Shanghai Pudong Airport form Jieyang Airport, after staying in Shanghai for one night, we arrived at Osaka. Since Kansai International Airport is built on the sea, the very first sight of the blue sea suddenly turned to land really impressed me. From then, the scenery of studying journey really opened.

Hospital and Apartment

The staff of the International Center, Ms. Torii treated us very kindly with great patience. On the very first day, Ms. Torii showed us the apartment with a package of living equipment, like all the kitchen staff, the TV, computer, washing machine, even towel, which really comfortable and convenient. Another thing is that the students were really nice for taking us around, from which I had a more specific feeling of Hyogo Collage of Medicine. The hospital and the collage are very clean, quiet and modern, and they are in the same building group. Besides, the students treated us with rotary sushi as the first meal in Japan, which were really delicious.

Pediatrics
My first two weeks spent in Pediatrics under the supervision of Prof. Takeshima and the doctors there. Prof. Takeshima is a knowledgeable and professional doctor, who is focused on the Duchene muscular dystrophy (DMD) for almost 30 years and had already found the gene therapy method to make the DMD patients live better. The outstanding research really made me admire him so much.
In the Department of Pediatrics, I went to the clinic, wards and Neonatal Department. The doctors are really skilled at the medical operation. The doctors there showed me the desensitization therapy, the kidney diseases therapy like enuresis, and also the procedure took new born baby to NICU and so on. The atmosphere is so harmonious for which doctors even made families photos in wards to make children happier in the hospital. What a warm manner! As for the most common disease, their most common disease is allergic while in our Chinese Pediatrics is pneumonia. There also are some severe patients living with their life support machine. Though being tough, doctors and parents all have a good attitude for it, which I think the hospital has much stronger power to save the severe children. And the patients’ numbers are also less than our country which I think lets the doctors have more time to do the research.
I really want to thank Prof. Takeshima for giving me so much help in studying two weeks, the time there could described in one Japanese sentence “めちゃすてき”, which the doctors there taught me.
Biochemistry

Another two weeks I spent in Biochemistry. Prof. Suzuki and the researchers there treated me very well. In that two weeks, I learned library basic knowledge and did experiments with Prof. Yoshi, who lead me do the mouse kidney cell culture, western blotting, and experiment designing and so on. Prof. Yoshi’s specialty is iron metabolism. Every day I did cell culture or west blotting, and had lunch between the time gaps. Though having been busy, I enjoyed the time so much. Prof. Fujiwara has a great interest of Chinese culture, and she studied in Peking University years ago. We really talked a lot in Chinese, Which made me excited. Besides the experimental knowledge, teacher Yoshi also talked much Japanese culture and delicious Japanese foods. I still remember the famous ramen around the hospital the teacher told me. Thanks to the teaching of professors, I could learn a lot.

Trip on Weekends

On weekends, we three went out for sightseeing to see the different culture. We went to Osaka, a city that is modern and prosperous. Nara is a quiet and neat city; deer is so cute and we loved the feeling walking followed by deer. The city filled with cultural air and ancient feeling like Tokyo. I am very excited that I went to some places ever saw in movies and animations. The summer firework with local people wearing traditional Japanese clothes which called “ゆかた” is so splendid.

My Thanks

I want to express my great appreciation for having this opportunity studying in Hyogo College of Medicine. Prof. Miwa, Prof. Takeshima, Prof. Suzuki and all the members in their departments helped me a lot in four weeks clinical clerkship. This was my first time to go abroad, the time in Japan let me have more actual experiences about overseas life and communication of different culture. The doctors’ professional spirit and skilled operations made me think the essence of the medicine. Japanese medical insurance system and doctors’ great job inspired me to work harder for making our own country get developed.
