OUR MONTH AT HYOGO COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, JAPAN

● Klara Pulić(University of Rijeka)

01.jpgThis summer, I spent one month on exchange in Japan-it's an exchange between my college (University of Rijeka, Faculty of Medicine) and Hyogo College of Medicine. Before coming to Japan, I had feelings of doubt: I was worried whether or not I would be able to communicate with people, understand what the doctors say in the hospital or be able to fit in as a normal student in Japan. I think that people have all kinds of opinions and views about Japan, but we don't know whether those opinions are correct without visiting the country. In complete contrast to inexperienced beliefs about living within Japanese society, everyone I have had the pleasure of meeting here has been open, unreserved and interested in making my stay as fulfilled as possible. I had a chance to experience many things and visit many places.

I spent 4 weeks (20 working days) at the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Clinic. Every day, my schedule was from 8 AM till 3 PM. Most of the time I was in the operation rooms, so I managed to see many different types of operations, which were very interesting. One day per week, I spent in the pain Clinic and watching the nerve blocks. My Mentor and all the doctors from the Department were very friendly, kind and willing to explain to me everything in order to learn new things. I also tried some things and procedures which I didn't have the opportunity to do in my own country.

Since I was free during the weekend, I used this time to visit nearby places with 2 friends from Croatia, who also came with me on exchange and some Japanese students, who will spent 4 weeks in Croatia like we did in Japan. We planned our free time carefully and managed to see many nice places: Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Nara, Himeji. This whole experience was very interesting for us, because everything is much bigger and more crowded than in Croatia and the culture and food are also very different. In the end of our exchange, when we finished the hospital practice, we went to Tokyo and spent 5 days in the biggest city of the world.

I believe that choosing Japan as my destination for foreign exchange was a great idea. Not only it has been a place for me to learn, but also a place to meet new, very different and interesting people, visit many beautiful places and make memories that will last a lifetime. As the day of return to my home country approached, I became very sad. Now that it’s over, I miss everything a lot, my entire exchange will be something impossible to forget.
