In this letter I will try to describe the best experience of my life. When I was coming to Japan I knew something about Japan. I heard for great technology and cities. I saw everything I heard, it was really great, but still, it did not impress me so much. We have a lot of that in Croatia. But, I was so impressed with people. It is like in some better world. If someone told me, I would not believe.

OK. Let’s start with my first day at the College. My two friends from Croatia and I came to the College and met main professors from our departments. They had really nice words for us and we started to feel good about the College. Then I met people from my department. Professors, dental hygienists and dental technicians.... They were all so happy to see me. I felt so loved. They held a welcome party for me and then I showed them a presentation of my country and myself. I learned so much watching doctors while performing. Also, I asked them many questions. They were so patient while explaining me. Many things in Croatia we do on similar way, but there are also some differences that are very important and very useful. I was bringing my notebook everyday with me, so I wrote in it everything I found new and different.

People at my department made my time great. They asked me what I like to do and made all my wishes come true. We played volleyball and table tennis. We went to all different trips and dinners. They showed me their culture and traditions, like tea ceremony with professor Zushi. We went to Nara, a town where deers are walking through the city and you can touch them. It was so great experience. I took so many great photos there and I bought great souvenirs. One of doctors, who took care of me, Yoko, she bought a ninja masks for Damijan and me, so we put it on head and walked with them by the city, it was so funny. People looked at us really weird. We were taller than everybody and wearing ninja masks.

Also, professor Kishimoto and dental hygienists showed me how to do oral care in critical patients. Our guest house was so nice, we really had everything we needed. House was so clean and modern. It was so funny because on the beginning we didn’t know how to use toilets. It looked like space shuttle to us. Japanese students who came to Croatia did so much for us in Japan. They were real friends and I enjoyed spending time with them. They took us on many dinners and I also went with Ryota on beach with his car. We even played beach volleyball on that beach.

I really liked Japanese food. Everything was great except raw fish. To be honest, I didn’t like it so much at the first time I tried it. We were so hungry at the first day we came, and I really wanted to eat something that would make me full. But the lady in the restaurant, she was only bringing fish, and fish and more fish… It was like nightmare. After that expensive dinner I went to supermarket to eat some real food. Still, that dinner was very expensive and I am very grateful to try that food. But, next time I tried raw fish, with some fried potatoes, it was really good. Maybe I only needed to get used to it. Every other food was so delicious, starting with potato salad to Udon and Tempura.

Our Bulgarian friend, Doctor Yosif helped us a lot with explaining Japanese culture difference. He is also from Balkan, so he knew what was surprising for us. Also, he showed us night life in Japan. It is so different than in Europe. For example, it is very hard to see white or black people in Osaka or Kobe. But, when you go in night club, there are more strangers. Also, Japanese people in clubs are much friendlier and relax than in Europe. It is normal to come to everybody and speak. It is so nice. It was sometimes problem with language because Japanese people are very shy and they don’t want to speak or do anything if they are not 100 percent sure.

Also, what surprised me was how much Japanese people work. They have so long working hours and some doctors said they even don’t use their vacation days. One of my friend doctors in Japan, Mucho, said it is bad Japanese style. I totally agree with him. But still, I noticed that Japanese people really love their work. And conditions on their work are really good. Doctors speak a lot with their patients and really take time for every patient. They do all by the rules and people really can trust them. It is so nice to see, so when you go to a doctor or anywhere, you know you will get perfect service. That is one big difference than in Croatia.

Also, we felt so secure, even going out at night. Trains are really correct on time and people are so calm and kind. It was really big cultural shock to us. I am really happy to have seen Japanese culture and people and I would be so happy to come to Japan again or meet Japanese people in Croatia. Japan is my second homeland. Great thanks to Hyogo College of Medicine and great thanks to Japan!!!!
