My Experience in Japan

Marin Golčić (University of Rijeka)

marin1.jpg Japan is the 3rd country I have visited as an exchange student, which means I have some experience from different cultures and countries.

Our trip, our adventure started with Tokyo where we spent first 3 days. It was a very interesting experience and we managed to see a lot – from Akihabara, Harajuku, Shinjuku, to Senso-ji temple, Meiji-ji. I was quite impressed with Odaiba Island – especially the Museum of emerging sciences. We arrived to Osaka on Sunday and were warmly welcomed by Risa from the Center for International Programs and one of the students. We finally arrived at the Guest House and I have to say – it’s one of the best accommodations that I have ever seen! Beautiful house with lots of space – it was more than we imagined. Maybe one more cooker and a couple more forks and knives would be great but we really appreciated the House. Especially the toilets with buttons – for us, it’s very amazing and new, almost a tourist attraction.

My clerkship was on Cardiology – I was placed on CCU where I met the doctors who took care of me: Dr. Shibuya, Eguchi, and many more such as Dr. Okn, Tomo, Komori etc. They were really great and although not all could speak perfect English, we managed to communicate quite well, sometimes using hands or even drawing. Luckily, as ECG, echo and stethoscopes are all international – I had no problems understanding medical information during the clerkship. I really must say a big thank you to Dr. Nakabo, who just returned from New York. She spent a lot of time teaching me about the echocardiography and these lessons were invaluable to me. She even asked her colleague to lie down so I could even try the echo on a real person. I tried to learn a lot, even spend time reading books at home, so I can improve, and I really feel I have learned a lot and that this exchange was great, in both cultural as well as professional way. For one day visits I have been to Pain Clinic, E.R. and Orthopaedics – I have to recommend the latter one as it was a beautiful day with amazing people. I also have to say a big thank you to Neurosurgical department. Although I haven’t been there even for one day visit, I have met them thanks to Petar, the other Croatian student. They seemed so amazing and even took us to dinner so they can learn more about us, about Croatia.

marin1.jpg I also liked hanging out with Japanese students, as we experienced much of Japan through them. Some took us to Osaka for dinner and parties whilst others took us to Kyoto, Kobe and Nara to experience the old Japanese culture – and both of these were amazing and greatly appreciated. I feel that now I understand the Japanese culture as well as the people much more, and I am happy to say that I have learned even some Japanese words, as well as eating with chopsticks.

I feel that the value of this exchange program lies in many different aspects. First, we learned a lot about Japan and Japanese customs, but I also feel that the Japanese learned a lot about Croatia and some European customs. Second, in professional terms, I enjoyed the exchange as I learned a lot, especially some techniques which are still unavailable to Croatia. Third, I feel that I have met some new friends and I hope that these friendships will continue throughout the years – and this is really an important part of the exchange. And lastly, I feel that when you travel so far and experience a culture so different, you can see the things in your own country almost through different eyes. You now know that some things can be done differently and you know that you can improve some things, or appreciate more others, which you haven’t seen in one month.

All in all, I will remember Japan for the rest of my life and I feel and I hope that I have turned out a better and a more complete person after this month. Thank you for this experience.
