A Month in Japan

Edita Devčić (University of Rijeka)

The stories from the people that went to Japan could not have prepared me for what I have experienced. The month I spent in Japan is among the best times I have ever had.

I arrived to Japan on September 22nd and fell in love with it immediately. I came a day earlier than Marin and Petar and I used that time to visit my friend who lives in Ubeshinkawa. On my way there I managed to see also Miyajima. It left me breath taken. Marin, Petar and me spent our first days together in Tokyo. The bright neon lights and the vivid atmosphere amazed us. It was interesting to see the incorporation of ancient temples, castles and shrine with modern buildings which we saw throughout Japan.

What amazed us even more were the people. From the first day of our arrival in Nishinomiya the college staff, students and doctors have outdone themselves in order to make us feel welcomed. The first day Ms. Otsuji came to pick us up from the airport. She gave us all the information and our schedules for the next month. Mariko, Mayuka and Ko, the Japanese students that came to Croatia, took us out on our first dinner. From that day on we became really close with them. It was the beginning of a wonderful friendship. In the next weeks they introduced us to their friends and we all socialized. They accompanied us on our field trips on the weekends to Kyoto, Kobe and Nara. It was a huge help having them with us as our guides.

The accommodation that Hyogo College of Medicine provided us was more than we could have ever hoped for. The spacious rooms and the vicinity of the hospital of the guest house surprised us all. We were eager to see the Japanese toilets and showers because in Croatia they are not automatic like here. It was strange having to set the temperature of the shower before even entering in it.

All three of us, Marin, Petar, and me were grateful for all the effort the doctors went through to explain us as much as they can. Since I was at the lower gastrointestinal surgery department I mostly watched operations. As my mentor was doctor Tomita I spent most of my time with the cancer team watching colorectal carcinoma operations. It was interesting to see the techniques that the surgeons use. They offered me to assist whenever there was an opportunity. On the days when there were no operations I would attended the outpatient clinic, barium enema testing or colonoscopies. This year we had a great opportunity to visit other three departments during our stay. I visited the orthopedics department, the pediatric surgery department and the intensive and emergency care unit.

I would like to thank all the doctors, the staff from the international office and especially the students who introduced us to all the wonders of Japan from the excellent food to the tea ceremony and other customs. It was an incredible experience which I will remember for the rest of my life. I can only hope that this program will continue and give the same opportunity to other students.
